Mural will soon hang with pride
DETERMINATION was the key for local artist Cassandra
Gamble, who has just completed her mural, which she had been
hard at work at since March last year. If you have walked past her
studio inside The Dog Rock Shopping Centre over the last
few months you may have noticed her three
paintings, which stretch over 12 panels.
The paintings are inspired by locations in the Great Southern
and are called Early Morning over Bluff Knoll, Wedged Tailed
Eagles over the Stirling Rangers and Moonlit Evening over King
George Sound.
Each painting is made up of four panels, which Gamble said
were dedicated to the Aboriginal youth of the Great Southern and
in memory of teenager Panache Woods. “I decided to give back
something her elders had given me,” Gamble said.
“I was privileged to be mentored by Aboriginal elders.
“I was inspired to do this because they were and such
great family friends.” Gamble said the project was
just something she decided to do and with the help of her parents
Jim and Libby Smith, who are both artists and the generous
community she has finished the project.
Residents will have the opportunity to view the mural,
which will go along the Dog Rock Shopping Centre’s Lockyer
Avenue wall in the next few weeks.
“I’ve done this so the Aboriginal youth can look at their heritage. I was privileged to
grow up there – I’ve drawn what I remember," she said.
“I’ve dedicated this to them. I want these paintings to remain
in Albany to encourage the upcoming generations."
Gamble said local businesses including the Dog Rock Shopping
Centre who donated $5000 for the project, Let’s Party Hire, O’Keefe
Paints, Frederickstown Painters and TAFE had enabled the
project to go ahead.
